SAFETY EDUCATION STEWARDSHIP
"Promoting safety for All persons and the outdoor environments where they find adventure!"
MISSION:
The Adaptive Outdoor Safety Council has a twofold mission: (1) to promote safety, education and leadership for persons all ages with disabilities (physical and/or developmental, chronic medical diagnoses, chronic illnesses, and other special health needs who participate in adaptive outdoor sports (snow sports, water sports, and wilderness adventures) and (2) to promote stewardship and protection of the outdoor environments where adaptive activities are offered and enjoyed.
The Adaptive Outdoor Safety Council was inspired and co-founded through the passion and vision of Creed Leffler, young man with cerebral palsy, who came up with the idea when he was 11 y/o. After considerable time spent on the ski slopes, Creed believed, "we can and we should do more to promote safety." It was Creed's idea to develop an Adaptive Ski Patrol (comprised of adaptive skiers) committed to promoting slope safety. Other planning meetings helped us to further develop this concept to address all adaptive outdoor adventure activities.
Creed, now 16 y/o, is an avid skier who has participated with THERAPEUTIC ADVENTURES, INC. - Massanutten Adaptive Snow Sports ever since he was 6 years of age. He uses an adaptive ski called a Bi-ski, one of many types of sit skis designed for persons who use a wheelchair as their primary means of mobility. Creed is also an avid fly fisherman participating for the past five years with our ADAPTIVE ANGLERS ON THE FLY – Fly Fishing Camp for Disabled.
